Do you hands shake?

We’ve all done it at one time or another – spilled a bite of food or sloshed our drink all over our clothing. But what happens when it’s every bite? What happens when our handwriting becomes an unsightly mess?

What is Essential Tremor?

Essential tremor is a nervous system disorder that causes involuntary and rhythmic shaking. This disorder can affect almost any part of your body, but the trembling occurs most often in your hands. Tremors are most apparent when you do simple tasks, such as drinking from a glass or tying your shoes.

Acupuncture – An Alternative Treatment for Essential Tremor

Because acupuncture diagnosis and treatment looks beyond any one symptom, there is rarely a single solution to a symptom as broad as essential tremors. Chinese medicine seeks to find the root cause to the presenting issues for each individual. I liken this to my car. I shouldn’t always assume the solution to my engine problems is to simply fill up my gas tank.

With this neurological condition, the goal of a series of acupuncture visits is to improve the essential tremor symptoms. The treatment plan also considers how to alleviate the many secondary issues such as anxiety, depression, muscle dysfunction, and sleep dysfunction. Traditional Chinese Medicine is uniquely combined with evidence-based clinical reasoning. We can provide a unique approach relevant to both acupuncture and western clinical practice.

While some symptoms may resolve entirely with acupuncture, just an improvement in symptoms is useful to the individual. I would suggest that people with essential tremor may see improvement in sleep, attitude, mobility, etc. and therefore in this context acupuncture may be very helpful.
